The most important rules of hiking in nature

Primary aim of the protected areas is to conserve natural treasures. At the same time they offer thousands of visitors a possibility for resting and recreation. During hiking please act according to the rules below.

Plan carefully!

  • Please carefully plan your trips to the protected areas! Consider the weather, the terrain, the length of the road. Don’t forget, you may cross private ground several times.
  • To enter the strictly protected areas except for the appointed nature trails and tourist routes is only possible with the written permission of the conservation authority. The strictly protected areas are marked with boards.

Eat, dink, rest!

  • For the trip take along easily digestible food with high energy content and sufficient drinks. Water is the best, for with it you may also wash yourself.
  • Never throw away the wrappings of food and drinks! Discarded paper, plastic litter is not a nice sight, decomposes slowly or not at all, pollutes the environment, is a threat to the animals.
  • Pleas take along the litter and discard it at the end of the trip to the appointed collector.
  • Everyone may pick from the wild fruits. Please take into consideration that others would like to taste them as well. Take care to taste only berries you know! Several fruits are poisonous.
  • In forests and upon fields many mushrooms can be found. There are among them distasteful and poisonous ones as well. When collecting mushrooms, please observe the rules. Always show the mushroom to an expert before preparing a meal from it.
  • You are asked to relieve yourself – if no appointed facilities are available – further away from the trails. Dig a small hole into the ground and bury it after use. Excrements and used paper are not a nice sight and may even cause infection. Moreover, next time you may be the one who steps into it.

Careful with the fire!

  • Fire may be laid only on appointed locations (the appointed fireplaces are listed in the description of each protected area). Lay just as big a fire that is necessary. For making a fire collect fallen, dry twigs. Before leaving the fireplace please convince yourself that the fire is completely extinguished. With care you may prevent big destruction.
  • When lighting a fire always consider the rules of it! Don’t use naked light, don’t lay a fire if there is a ban on this! Never lay a fire in the case of drought or strong wind!

Remembrances for our home…

  • On your trip please don’t pick flowers and don’t collect animals! On protected areas the demolition and collection of even unprotected species is prohibited!
  • Picked wild flowers quickly wither. Their beauty better prevails in nature than in a vase. By picking the most beautiful individuals you may contribute to the genetic decline of a species. Several wild flowers are poisonous and may cause skin irritation or other inconvenience.
  • Don’t squelch mushrooms, they have an important role in nature!
  • Photos preserve the moment, at best record your experiences made during the trip on photos. Please take your pictures by disturbing nature to the least possible extent. Don’t tear off plants for the sake of a better composition! Please don’t photograph birds near nests, your presence disturbs their life. Young birds stay alive without the care of their parents only a short time!

Traffic rules:

  • If possible, please use public transport when traveling to a protected area. Plese take into consideration that on these places only a limited number of parking places are available.
  • Within protected areas vehicles only may use public roads and some appointed forest roads. For parking always use appointed areas! Entering roads without permission and parking on forbidden places are conservation offence and can be punished with paying a fine up to 150 000 Ft.
  • When walking, cycling or horse-riding please only use the appointed, present roads! On protected sites tourist roads and nature trails have been established on behalf of the tourists. Trampling of walkers, hooves of the horses and wheels of bicycles may create a new path. They tear up the vegetation enabling the spread of weeds. Moreover, on the meadows these activities endanger ground-nesting birds and animals living in the soil.

Fashionable sports within protected sites
According to the Hungarian law about the protection of nature practicing technical sports and organizing sport events is bound to permission from the conservation authority. Without that, these acts realize a conservation offence that can be punished with a fee of up to 150 000 Ft.

Below we share information about the practice of nowadays fashionable sports on protected areas.

Cross motoring and cross biking
On protected sites these sports may cause severe damage to the soil surface and thus to the vegetation. Aside from the damage to the nature they endanger hikers and disturb the ones who would like to rest. The practice of these sports on protected sites is only possible with the permission of the conservation authority. Against the ones who cross bike or motor without permission the rangers will proceed. In forests the additional permission of the forest manager is needed also. If you notice cross motoring or cross biking on protected or Natura 2000 sites, please contact immediately the ranger service.

Country-riding
Similarly to the technical sports, horse-riding may also cause damage to natural habitats. The national park directorate together with the forest managers has contacted the horse-riding centers situated around the protected areas to appoint the horse-riding routes together.

Geocaching
Geocaching is the product of recent years, its point is that somebody hides a small box somewhere and measures the coordinates of the spot with GPS, then he or she presents the coordinates to the others who try to find the box. The one who finds it writes something into the booklet in the box and may take something left there by the previous “treasure hunter” and leaves something there in exchange. Problem with the sport is that roaming in the area is neither secure nor nature-friendly.
To place the boxes requires the contribution of the conservation authority and in most cases of the land owner as well. Boxes placed into vulnerable (e.g. strictly protected) areas will be removed immediately by the staff of the directorate. Further information you may get from the homepage of the "kincsvadászok" association.

Paragliding
Paragliding is also a product of the last 15 years. Within the areas belonging to the Fertő-Hanság National Park Directorate there is no registered starting place for paragliders, basically because there are only a few places suitable for this sport. This sport causes problems presently only in the surroundings of Sopron and in Sokoró, where the starting gliders may easily trample the sensitive rock- and loess meadows. Please do not practice this sport upon our protected areas!

Rock climbing
Within our range there are only on a few places cliffs suitable for climbing but on those climbing is not allowed.

When taking a trip to the national park please take into consideration that the maintenance of the protected sites needs a lot of money and effort. Please don’t abuse the tourist signs, information desks, benches, resting places. These serve the orientation and comfort of tourists.

Please contribute to the conservation of the natural treasures of Hungary by following the rules!
